Spread Eagle (Wales - UK, Heavy Psych Rock / Hard Rock) - mało znane zespoły
Przygotowując tę publikację, udało mi się nawiązać kontakt z Alanem Hardingiem (perkusista zespołu),
który przekazał mi kilka istotnych informacji o zespole - za które serdecznie dziękuję.
W drugiej połowie lat 60-tych Alan Harding i Tommy Goss (wokalista zespołu) byli członkami zespołu
ze Swansea (Wales, UK) o nazwie The John Smith Committee (m.in. w połowie 1969r. grupa ta
koncertowała w Niemczech). W 1970r. dołączyli do zespołu z Llanelli (Wales, UK) - May Fisher
(wiele dobrego słyszałem na temat tej grupy, niestety oficjalnie nie istnieją żadne nagrania tej formacji).
Grupa May Fisher działała na przełomie lat 60 i 70. Występowało w niej wielu ciekawych muzyków,
m.in. :
- Stuart Evans (keyboards, vocals)
- Keith Bryant (vocals)
- Gareth Evans (lead guitar)
- Andy Quigley (vocals, w pierwszej połowie lat 60-tych członek lokalnego zespołu o nazwie
The Spartans ze Swansea).
Latem 1971r. przed wyjazdem na tourne po Jugosławii, zespół opuścił Gareth (Gaz) Evans, grupa
przyjęła nową nazwę - Spread Eagle i wraz z nowym gitarzystą :
- Mike Japp (lead guitar, póżniej w The Marmalade),
udała się na zaplanowane tourne.
Tam właśnie - występując w zreformowanych składzie :
- Andy Quigley (vocals)
- Alan Harding (drums)
- Tommy Goss (vocals)
- Clive Harvey (bass)
- Mike Japp (guitar),
nagrała singiel (jedyne wydawnictwo tego zespołu) :
- "Pleasure Fellings" (Quigley, Japp)
- "To Tired To See" (Quigley, Japp),
wydany w 1972r. w Jugosławii (R.T.B. - Radio Televizija Beograd, S - 53635).
Po powrocie do domu (UK) w 1972r. postanowiono zmienić nazwę zespołu (okazało się, że w Londynie
działa zespół o takiej samej nazwie). Wybór nazwy - "Thank You" - nie okazał się zbyt trafny (przynajmniej
w ocenie niektórych muzyków), w krótkim czasie Alan Harding opuścił zespół.
Wiele lat póżniej (2011) "To Tired To See" ukazał się na kompilacyjnym wydawnictwie Audio Archives :
- V/A - "Heavy Prog Fallout"

"...Hi Paul, I'm afraid I can't be really accurate with the dates without doing a lot of research but here is a rough estimate. Myself and Tommy Goss were in Hamburg with a band Called The John Smith Commity in May of 1969, so it must have been in the following year that Tommy and I teamed up with May Fisher. So our trip to Yugoslavia must have been in the summer of 1971. That's when Mike Japp joined the band on lead guitar because Gareth didn't want to join the tour. That was also about the time we changed the name of the Band to Spread Eagle. Unfortunately when we returned to the UK about a year later we discovered there was a band in London with the same name. That's when we changed the name of the Band to Thank You which I personally though was a daft name. It was shortly after that that I left the band, I'm not saying it was the main reason but the new name certainly played s roll. I remember being embarest every time some one asked the name of the Band ha ha.
Not quite sure if May Fisher were in Hamburg and not JSC. I'm getting old. ... "
